7. Modern Infrastructure, Transportation, and Connectivity
CORE PROMISE: End “forgotten corridor” politics - move people faster, safer, and cheaper.
While other regions saw decades of federal and state investment, Southern Maryland — especially Prince George’s, Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s counties was left behind. The result is some of the worst congestion, longest commutes, and weakest transit options in the state.
Residents of MD-05 face:
Daily gridlock on MD-5, MD-4, and MD-301, where commute times routinely reach 60–90 minutes.
Waldorf chokepoint congestion, one of the worst non-interstate bottlenecks on the East Coast.
A dangerously outdated Thomas Johnson Bridge, long past its design life, still without federal funding for replacement.
A 20-year delay on the Southern Maryland Rapid Transit (SMRT) — a transit project that should already exist.
Transit deserts in Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s counties, leaving families with no alternatives to cars.
Purple Line delays that undermine regional confidence in major projects.
Spotty broadband in rural communities, especially in Calvert and St. Mary’s.
Climate impacts — flooding, erosion, and stormwater failures that local infrastructure cannot handle.
Economic stagnation caused when businesses avoid areas with heavy traffic and limited transit access.
High property taxes in Prince George’s County, without matching infrastructure investment.
MD-05 residents feel forgotten — because historically, they have been. It’s time to fix that.
HOW I’LL WORK TO FIX IT:
Fight to bring Southern Maryland Rapid Transit (SMRT) to life with real federal coordination and sustained funding pressure
Target MD-5/MD-4 and US-301 bottlenecks with specific projects, timelines, and reporting to ease traffic congestion
Push bridge replacement/retrofit priorities (including Thomas Johnson Bridge) with federal leverage
Modernize roads, water systems, and power grids
Invest in climate-resilient roads, water systems, and power grids
MD-05 FOCUS POINT:
I will work side-by-side with municipalities to bolster community-oriented transportation between counties (i.e. VanGo)
I will expand rural broadband access in Calvert and St. Mary’s Counties to ensure rural areas of MD-05 stay connected
I will create a “commute plan scoreboard” so residents can track progress instead of hearing promises
